How To Illuminate Your Home With Outdoor Lighting Fixtures

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Choosing the right outdoor lighting fixture can be daunting if you don’t know anything about choosing an outdoor lighting fixture system. Like most home improvement projects it takes time to install it and if you find that you chose the wrong kind of bulbs it can be a frustrating experience to start all over again.

You can start the process by asking yourself some questions about your lighting needs. This way you can eliminate having to buy two sets of lights and the extra work of uninstalling the wrong types of lights.

Why You Need Lights

The most important question you need to address is what do you need your lights for? If it is to highlight only one part of your house then this is where you need to concentrate on lighting. This will determine what kind of outdoor  lighting fixtures you will use, such as an outdoor halogen flood light. The kind of fixtures you choose will also be very important.

Depending on your house and how it is laid out your lighting needs will vary. You must take into consideration your neighbors and how your outdoor accent lighting fixtures will affect them. For example if you have neighbors whose property is very close to yours you will have to make sure that your outdoor  lighting fixtures does not intrude on their property.

Sensor Lighting Responds to Movement.

Part of the attraction to using outdoor lighting fixtures is that you can deter intruders from breaking into your property. A good way to deter intruders other unwanted visitors to your home is to install outdoor security  lighting that are connected to a motion sensor. Another option is to have your lights set to a timer, this is handy if you come home late at night or are going to be away. This will give your home a sense of being lived in and again will discourage your home being a target for burglars.

As a part of your decision making, you need to think about the brightness of outdoor lighting fixtures.  All you need to do is choose the right light bulbs and in the appropriate wattage.  Obviously, you want the illumination to enhance the appearance of the home, not blind people driving by. If you are unsure, you can check with the manufacturer for recommendations.

Lawn Maintenence

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Every homeowner aspires to have a great looking lawn and tries everything that he or she can do to attain such a lawn. So many people assume incorrectly that only a professional landscaper can create a great looking garden. This is not true at all. Hiring a landscape professional will of course reduce your work load, but it is possible for you to have a great looking lawn without the help of a landscape professional.

Even though there is no dearth of lawn care equipment, there are some that are absolutely vital for the upkeep of your lawn. Without these tools, any kind of lawn care would become impossible. A few of these extremely important tools: lawnmowers, rakes, aerators and shears.

Aerators are very important tools for lawn care since they create cavities or holes on the upper most layer of the soil. The allows the ground to move in a better way. In other words, it is because of aeration that water and nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the roots. But this is not all, is increases the oxygen levels in the soil and thus helps the roots to be stronger.

Lawnmowers have great utility in giving a neat and tidy look to the blades of the grass. Because it trims the dead grass and allows for the growth of healthier grass, it is a very beneficial service for your lawn. If you do choose to not purchase the recommended tools for your lawn, you must use a lawnmower which is extremely important.

Shears are one of those tools that are used to keep the hedges around the lawn with cutting and trimming the hedges as needed. If you have a creative streak in you, then you can even design your hedges according to your fancy with the help of shears. So, it is a very important tool for your lawn or garden.

Apart from all the tools mentioned above, rakes are the tools that play a great role in the health of your lawn. With the help of rakes, you can remove the leaves from your Los Altos garden. This is an important task as leaf pile-up will not let water and sunlight reach your grass and thereby the grass could ultimately wither away and die.

Finding these tools should not be difficult as any home hardware store or local home improvement store will stock these important tools. So, if you use these tools for maintaining your lawn, there is no reason why you should not have a glowing and healthy garden throughout the year and that too, without the assistance of professionals who specialize in metal landscape edging.

Equipment for your Garden Pond

Lining a Pond

One of the most crucial aspects of constructing your pond is ensuring that you have enough pond liner. Having too little pond liner means you will need to rethink the size of your pond or you will have a pond that is not always watertight.

When measuring your pond you need to consider not just the length and width that you pond will take on the ground, but also the depth of the pond into the ground i.e. you need to know the pond’s volume.

A good rule of thumb is to measure your pond and then add a couple of feet to both measurements. This will allow your rubber pond liner to sit slightly proud of your hole in the ground ensuring that your pond is fully watertight and that your pond water does not seep away.

Pond Filtration

Another essential part of building a pond is a good filtration system. If you look for pond filters on the net you will find a good selection to choose from.

But what is it you need out of a filtration system? To achieve an efficient biological surface you must ensure that the water that enters the filtration is rich in oxygen. This helps the friendly bacteria to oxidise the waste products through the nitrogen cycle. This is called aerobic filtration. Filter systems must fulfil the following criteria:

  • The filter volume should be at minimal 10% of the ponds volume.
  • You should be aiming to turn over at least half the ponds volume once per hour.
  • The filter should have several chambers which can be which can be kept separate and emptied individually when cleaning. And a vortex should be included.
  • The biological surface area should be at least one square metre per ten cubic metres of pond water.
  • An ultra violet clarifier should be installed to eliminate single celled algae, which causes green water.

There are two main types of filtration. The first type of filter is called a gravity feed where water is removed from the pond via a bottom drain. It is then forced via gravity through the filter which is sited buried in the ground close to your pond so that the water level in both your filtration and pond are the same. The water is then returned to the pond via a dry sited pond pump through an outlet in the side wall of the pond below the waterline. Because the biological surfaces will have depleted the oxygen during oxidisation of the waste products it is important at this stage to use a venturi on the outlet to oxygenate the returned water.

The second main filtration type and probably the more familiar is a pressurised feed filter. This involves an internal solid handling pump at the deepest part of the pond pumping water through a flexible pipe up to the filter which is sited above the surface level of the pond, which allows the water to return by the forces of gravity.

Water Pumps

Without a good pond pump, a water garden is at the mercy of bacteria, lack of oxygen, and the settling of dirt and debris. In circulating and oxygenating water continuouslyd a dependable pond pump can do wonders for maintaining a healthy environment and balanced ecosystem in your garden pond. Additionally, the water pump plays an important role in keeping humans and pets safe by helping to prevent unwanted insect pests from breeding and infesting the area. You can find a wide variety of pond pumps to fit every small pond application from good aquatic and water garden retailers.

If you are serious about having a garden pond whether its for wild life or koi, have a look round for pond and aquatics retailers that not only sell you the product but also provide good advice and after sales assistance.

Oak Death Info

In 1995, a new disease of tan oaks, black oaks and coast live oaks appeared in Mill Valley, Marin County, California. Hundreds of bay area oak trees appeared to be dying suddenly across the landscape, both in woodlands and in suburban properties around the San Francisco Bay Area, but most especially in cities in the Bay Area foothills, such as  Palo Alto, Atherton, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Cupertino, Saratoga, Monte Sereno, Los Gatos.

The essentials about Sudden Oak Death Syndrome:

1. The entire San Francisco Bay Area is at risk for Sudden Oak Death.
2. Tan Oaks, black oaks, coast live oaks are all able to contract the disease.
3. Sudden Oak Death is entirely preventable according to the most current research.

Why Sudden Oak Death is Sudden? Generally diseases slowly kill oak trees over a ten or fifteen year process. Sudden Oak Death can kill a tree completely within a year. Infections by Phytophthora ramorum (the pathogen which corelates to Sudden Oak Death) on oaks were originally called “Sudden Oak Death” because of the rapid (2 to 4 weeks) browning of leaves without an obvious prolonged period of visible decline.

Sudden Oak Death could be one of the most dangerous threats to California Coast Live Oaks, Black Oaks, and Tan Oaks in the history of the state of California. But, it can be prevented and controlled by chemical methods. We would suggest regular treatment for all three different oak tree varieties. If the oak treas are properly treated with the right chemical materials, they are quite unlikely to be affected by Sudden Oak Death Syndrome. It is totally possible to manage the rapid progress of Sudden Oak Death and even possible to keep a tree from dying when it has caught the disease, but prevention is much more effective. Have these varieties of oak trees? Call a professional for regular treatment. We’ll help you save your trees!

Sudden Oak Death has been found killing oak trees widely in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties as well as in the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Common Outdoor Carpet Buying Mistakes

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Outdoor carpet choices, styles and applications have become almost overwhelming, and the builder or homeowner is faced with a far more difficult choice than at the times when there were only a few options.

There are different types of outdoor carpet for all kind of specialized uses and situations, and depending on where outside your house you want to put it, there are more choices.

Still, one of the most important and primary considerations is the amount of dampness that the carpet will be subject to. This will be a primary determinant of the underlying needed quality, and therefore of cost.

The basic material for outdoor carpet production is olefin, which is a derived version of Polypropylene its texture is a little rough compared to other choices but it’s quite resistant, so it’s a decent enough choice for heavy duty use. Its resistance to sunlight is also good, so colors won’t fade on an olefin outdoor carpets.

Depending on the quality, grass type carpet can or cannot be used outside of covered areas. The cheapest outdoor carpet of this kind is pretty thin and will not last long if constantly exposed to rain.

The next step up is higher quality grass-like olefin base outdoor carpeting, which is more moisture resistant and generally much better in areas subject to lots of passing and other heavy use. This grade is recommended over the simpler version, as it will last much longer.

The next alternative is one of many kinds of plush outdoor carpet. These come in a variety of different materials, some natural but mostly synthetic, and are manufactured to resemble indoor carpeting, with the added benefit of being more resistant, as well as mold- and waterproof to a certain degree.

You can judge this kind of outdoor carpeting according to similar criteria than for indoor carpets, e.g. look at the number4 of knots, the fibers, and so on. Plus, don’t forget to consider their waterproofness.

Always check the backing of the carpet, as this is the main element that blocks moisture from seeping up the ground and that ensures that the outdoor carpet will have a long life.

When looking to buy outdoor carpeting, don’t neglect to look at the offer in different shops, whether on-line or brick and mortar, and don’t try to save a few pennies on the total as this will often affect the time before having to replace the outdoor carpet.
